Paris Regional Health Announces Inpatient Internal Medicine Observership ProgramĀ
January 8, 2024
We're excited to offer an exceptional opportunity to motivated learners who want to shadow our team during work rounds. You'll have the chance to witness physicians interacting with patients, participate in meaningful discussions about clinical cases, review medical literature, enhance your clinical knowledge and observe the teamwork required to care for patients. This hands-off shadowing experience is a great way to gain exposure and broaden your understanding of Internal Medicine.
Where will this rotation take place: Paris Regional Health - near DFW
Hours: Monday to Friday for 2 weeks.
The preceptor has provided the hours, which are subject to change at their discretion, but the minimum total hours will remain approximately the same.
You will be supervised by a board-certified internal medicine physician who is also an experienced educator.
During this US clinical experience, you will rotate through the inpatient hospital, where the preceptor is currently seeing 16-24 patients daily. This will be an excellent opportunity to develop experience and skills in patient care and gain an understanding of the healthcare system, which is highly valued by residency programs.
You will be expected to discuss cases comprehensively with your faculty, diagnose patients seen in the hospital and defend your clinical reasoning. Additionally, preventive medicine is a focal point of this rotation, and students will be expected to know age-appropriate screening practices. You will learn how to educate and counsel patients on lifestyle modifications and the importance of non-pharmacological measures to maintain good health.
Observership Objectives:
• To familiarize learners with the U.S. medical system
• To become proficient in patient presentation on daily rounds
• To gain experience working in a multidisciplinary healthcare team
• To learn how to interpret basic lab tests and radiology data such as blood, urine, serum, and x-rays.
• To research literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care
• To spend time with other healthcare professionals in the office to understand their roles and responsibilities
Who should consider this rotation: International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in inpatient internal medicine.
